Modders have gotten their hands on an unofficial version of Nvidia’s DLSS 5, and they are applying its AI rendering effects to a wide variety of games. From Control and Skyrim to GTA V and even Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the leaked technology is being tested in ways that Nvidia may not have anticipated. The experiments are producing striking visual changes, but they are also raising questions about performance, artistic intent, and whether the AI enhancement actually improves games or simply makes them look strange.
How the DLSS 5 leak happened
The unofficial DLSS 5 code reportedly appeared inside an early-access build of NBA 2K27. Members of the RenoDX modding channel on Discord found a way to extract the DLSS “Neural Rendering” file and apply it to Control. From there, the mod spread to other titles. The DLSS 5 technology, which Nvidia has positioned as a major leap forward for AI graphics, was never meant to be publicly available at this point. Yet the leak has given modders a preview of what Nvidia’s next-generation upscaling and rendering tech can do outside of official demos.
Nvidia first announced DLSS 5 in March, describing it as a system that uses AI to create “photoreal lighting and materials” in real-time. The official announcement included demos from Resident Evil Requiem, Starfield, and Hogwarts Legacy. Those demos immediately sparked backlash from players, who complained that characters looked “yassified” or generic. The leak has now put similar tools in the hands of modders, allowing them to experiment with the technology across many different game engines and art styles.
Control: A dramatic demonstration
One of the first games to receive the unofficial DLSS 5 treatment was Control, Remedy Entertainment’s supernatural action title. In a video posted by modders, protagonist Jesse Faden’s facial features become more and less defined as different DLSS 5 settings are toggled. When the “Neural Uplift” setting is disabled, Jesse’s face has a smooth, uniform look. But when the feature is enabled with a certain preset, her face becomes paler, with more visible laugh lines and what appears to be makeup smudged beneath her eyes. It is a subtle but noticeable change, and it demonstrates how the AI is interpreting and reprocessing facial textures in real-time.
This kind of transformation is exactly what Nvidia has been promoting with DLSS 5. The company says the technology can add detail and realism that traditional rendering methods cannot achieve. However, the results are not always universally appealing. Some viewers have described the effect as “AI slop,” arguing that it makes characters look as though they have been run through an AI-enhanced filter commonly used on photos.
