Bailey started these workshops after noticing a surge in patron frustration. 'I was inspired by the feeling of people’s frustration with AI tools being kind of forced onto them,' he said. 'And feeling like AI tools we didn’t ask for are suddenly everywhere in our lives.' The workshop begins with an overview of how AI chatbots and consumer AI tools work, explaining both the benefits and the reasons why people might want to abstain. Then Bailey projects step-by-step instructions on how to turn off specific features across the most popular tech platforms and devices.
The Origins of the Avoiding AI Movement
Bailey’s inspiration came from Hannah Cyrus, a librarian in Bangor, Maine. Cyrus had been fielding an increasing number of questions from patrons who were confused and annoyed by AI features that kept popping up on their devices. 'More and more, I was getting questions about, “How do I turn this [AI] stuff off? Why is it trying to write my emails for me? Why is it trying to summarize my one-sentence email that I can easily read?”' she recalled. In response, she developed her own 'Avoiding AI' workshop and published a journal article about it. Bailey was one of dozens of librarians who contacted her after reading the piece.
'This has never happened before with anything I’ve worked on,' Cyrus said. 'Nobody has ever been emailing me like, “Can you give me your Intro to Computers slides?”' The interest was immediate and overwhelming. 'As a librarian, I think it’s important to see this as advancing digital literacy and helping people reclaim their autonomy over whether they want to use AI tools,' he said. 'It’s important, especially when it can be so difficult not to use them, and when the design seems to force adoption.' The workshops cover not only smartphones but also laptops, web browsers, and popular apps like Google Search, Microsoft Office, and social media platforms. Attendees learn how to disable AI writing assistants, image generators, search result summaries, and predictive text features.

After a wave of enthusiasm following the release of tools like ChatGPT in late 2022, many consumers are now expressing discomfort with the rapid proliferation of AI features across everyday devices. 'I feel like I have my device back,' one participant said after a recent workshop. 'It’s not spying on me or trying to do my thinking for me.' For librarians like Bailey and Cyrus, that feeling is the ultimate reward.
