The 20 Killer Kendrick Lamar Hits You Need To Create a Playlist

Kendrick Lamar Duckworth, widely known as Kendrick Lamar, is one of the most respected, decorated, and inventive rappers of his era. Born in Compton, California, on June 17, 1987, he started writing rhymes in high school under the name K.Dot. In 2005, he signed with Top Dawg Entertainment, and by 2011 his official debut album, Section.80, had already made him a critical favorite. A joint deal with Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records followed, and the music industry quickly understood that hip-hop had found a new storyteller.

Kendrick Lamar and His Career

Lamar's career is defined by fearless creative choices. After Section.80, he released good kid, m.A.A.d City in 2012, a cinematic concept album that explored gang violence, peer pressure, faith, and teenage life in Compton. The project introduced songs such as Swimming Pools (Drank), Poetic Justice, and m.A.A.d City, and it elevated him from promising newcomer to major artist. In 2015, he went even further with To Pimp a Butterfly, a dense, jazz-infused album about racial identity, fame, depression, and resilience. He followed that with DAMN., which was more direct and radio-friendly while still full of complex wordplay. Later albums such as Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers and GNX continued to stretch his sound, proving that he remains one of music's most restless minds.

His commercial record is just as striking.
